Writing Through the Obscure: Fiction Writing Workshop

Kramers | Tuesday Mar 17th, 2026 | 06 pm

In this workshop, we'll evaluate how French artist and illustrator, Guy Billout, captures a sense of dreamlike escapism through sparseness and unexpected elements in his artwork. Discussing how minimal design can inspire lofty ideas, we will walk out of the session having fleshed out our own scenes inspired by Billout's style. How can unexpected turns of phrases--much like unexpected imagery--challenge our perceptions as writers (and also as readers)? For those who want to participate, expect to swap drafts and critique each other's work.

The Devil is in the Details: Fiction Writing Workshop

Kramers | Tuesday, May 26 |

In this workshop, we're going to rework stories that we've hit a wall with. Stuck on how to further develop a character? With where your plot is going? Not sure what the ending to your story might be? Oftentimes, when we think we've got nowhere to go with a piece, we just need a fresh perspective. Please bring a story you don't consider finished and be ready to work through several exercises to get the wheels turning again. For those who want to participate, expect to swap drafts and critique each other's work.

When Objects Tell a Story: Fiction Writing Workshop

Kramers | Tuesday, April 21 |

What can random objects tell us about who owns them? What are their quirks? Their strengths? Their weaknesses? In this workshop, participants will be handed a printed ad at random from Facebook Marketplace. Based on the ad's description, the picture itself, and any other clues on the page, they will develop two distinct characters: the one who is selling and the one who is buying. How are the two different and how may they be alike? For those who want to participate, expect to swap drafts and critique each other's work.
